Figwort is available as aerial parts (i.e., flowering tops and dried leaves). It is taken orally or topically as an infusion, tincture, or fluid extract.

Oral:

  • infusion: 60 mL to 12 0mL, 2 g to 8 g
  • fluid extract: 2 g to 8 g dried equivalent (1:1, 25% ethanol); 2.5 mL to 5 mL
  • tincture: 0.2 g to 0.4 g dried equivalent (1:10, 45% ethanol); 1 mL to 3 mL. (1:2) (31 g, 500 mL of 76% ethanol) (1:15, 76% ethanol)

Topical:

  • infusion: 60 mL to 120 mL, 2 g to 8 g

Oral figwort is traditionally used:

  • as a diuretic
  • as a mild laxative
  • as an alterative
  • as an anodyne
  • to relieve the pains associated with menstruation
  • to treat cutaneous diseases, specifically eczema, psoriasis, and pruritus
  • to treat epiphyseal thickenings and fullness of the joints
  • to treat scrofula

Topical figwort is traditionally used:

  • to heal burns
  • to treat bruises, mammary inflammation, ringworm, piles, painful swelling, itch, and cutaneous eruptions of a vesicular character

Cautions and warnings: Consult a health care provider prior to use if you are diabetic.

Contraindications:

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • Do not use if you have ventricular tachycardia.
