Witch hazel is a plant that contains an active chemical called tannin, which is thought to be responsible for the herb's medicinal properties.
The leaves, bark, branches, and twigs of witch hazel are typically used to make supplements that you can take orally or use topically (e.g., as an external agent applied to the skin, or applied rectally or vaginally). Witch hazel taken orally includes fluidextracts and tinctures. The forms of witch hazel used topically include decoction (the liquid resulting from boiling the plant in water), ointments, gels, tinctures, fluidextracts, and liquids (e.g., as an astringent).
When applied to skin and used as an astringent, witch hazel can help reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids, bruises, damaged veins (varicose veins), and local swelling. It can also help stop minor bleeding or soothe skin irritation.
When taken orally, witch hazel has been used for diarrhea.

Research suggests that witch hazel, when applied topically, may help to temporarily relieve itching, discomfort, or burning from hemorrhoids. It also appears to reduce minor bleeding and has some benefit in reducing skin irritation.
There is not enough evidence to support oral use for treating diarrhea.
Witch hazel may be safely used for up to 3 to 4 days. If your symptoms persist or worsen, or you experience side effects, consult your health care provider.
Witch hazel is likely safe when used externally. Side effects of witch hazel taken orally include constipation and stomach upset. Taking it by mouth at high doses can result in liver damage. Topical witch hazel can cause skin rash.
Do not take the witch hazel water form by mouth, which is for topical use only.
Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use any form of witch hazel.
