Be a natural at healthy living

Career woman. Wife. Mom. Friend. You spend so much time on others, what about a little me time? Try out one of these holistic therapies and enjoy some 'ahhhh' time.

Balance it out with Ayurvedic medicine

Ayurveda translates to "Science of Life" and is one of the world's oldest medical systems. It's all about maintaining a balance of the mind, body and spirit. Treatments include, herbal medicines, cleansing therapies, massage, meditation, chakra therapy and more.

Go feet first into Reflexology

Specific parts of your body may be connected to different areas of your feet. You can think of reflexology as a healthy foot massage. Applying pressure to specific points on your foot is thought to enhance the corresponding body system. In other words, you'll feel great from less stress, improved circulation and the elimination of toxins.

Open up to Acupuncture

Acupuncture is about opening energy pathways to help prevent or cure diseases by energizing the body's natural healing abilities. Modern science recognizes that inserting needles stimulates the brain's nervous system, causing a release of chemicals that can change the perception of pain and trigger the release of hormones that have shown to boost the body's ability to heal. What does all this say? Acupuncture can help you feel better.

No sweat is no good

There is strong research to support that physical activity for women and girls is critical to their health and general well being. Women who regularly participate in sports and fitness programs have a significantly lower risk for developing breast cancer, osteoporosis and depression. In fact, regular physical activity reduces the risk of over 25 chronic conditions.

Canada's Activity Guide recommends at least 1 hour of physical activity a day. Instead of worrying about fitting 60 minutes into your schedule, you can divide the time up in ten-minute chunks through out your day. Here are other tips for activating your active lifestyle:

Work your walk.

Instead of hopping the bus, walk part of the way to work. Or park a little further a way.

Add it up.

Keep a fitness journal and record your activities and time. Be motivated to increase your minutes each week.

Play together.

Work fitness into your social calendar. Join a team sport. You can make new friends or spend quality time with your partner.

Have a healthy retirement.

Take the opportunity to spend time with your grandchildren while being active. Walk them to school or go for nature hikes. You can also take a splash into aqua fit. Water sports give added resistance while supporting your bones and joints. Volunteering is also a great way to stay active and do good for your community.
