Rexall Complete Probiotic
Why should probiotics be used in conjunction with antibiotic treatment?
- Almost all antibiotic treatments disturb the colonies of gastrointestinal flora, the health-supporting bacteria that live in the digestive tract. This can cause a variety of symptoms, most notably diarrhea.
- In the general population, antibiotic-associated diarrhea occurs in anywhere from 5% to 62% of cases, from the start of antibiotic therapy to as long as 2 months after treatment.
- Clostridium difficile diarrhea, among the most serious adverse events related to antibiotic use, occurs most often in older, immune-compromised adults admitted to hospital.
- From 11% to 62% of children who receive antibiotics reported incidences of diarrhea.
Increasing evidence suggests probiotics help prevent or improve gastrointestinal conditions, including infectious diarrhea and diarrhea related to antibiotic use.
