What is Dry Eye?

Advanced dry eye relief.

What is dry eye?
Dry eye is a condition caused by reduced production or increased evaporation of tears, which leads to eye irritation.
What causes dry eye?
Several factors can contribute to dry eye: Computer use – When working at a computer or using a smartphone or other portable digital device, we tend to blink our eyes less fully and less frequently, leading to greater tear evaporation. Health conditions – Diseases such as diabetes, thyroid-associated conditions, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis can contribute to dry eye. Medications – Many prescription and nonprescription medicines increase the risk, including antihistamines, antidepressants, certain blood pressure medications and birth control pills. Allergies – Allergies, and taking antihistamines to relieve them, can cause dry eye. Use of contact lenses. Aging – becomes more common after age 50. Menopause – Post-menopausal women are at greater risk. Indoor environment – Air conditioning, ceiling fans and forced air heating can decrease humidity and hasten tear evaporation. Outdoor environment – Dry climates, high altitudes and windy conditions increase risk. Air travel – Airplane cabin air is extremely dry. Wearing a mask – Masks can dry the eyes by forcing air over the surface of the eye.
