Insect Bites and Hives: How Can My Rexall Pharmacist Help?

The facts about insect bites and hives

Insects represent the largest division of the animal kingdom, with the number of species estimated at 6-10 million. We are all aware that bees and wasps inflict their pain on humans with the use of “stingers.” What is less well-known is that insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, spiders, bed bugs, black flies, horse flies, and mites use their mouths to “bite” the skin. Insect bites often result in an itchy bump or bumps called hives. Severe allergic reactions that require emergency attention are most often due to bee, wasp, hornet, yellow-jacket, and fire ant stings. Insect bites can cause redness, itching, and swelling (hives) but rarely require emergency attention like some insect stings do.

If you or your family member has had a bothersome reaction to an insect bite, see your Rexall Pharmacist

If you or a family member has been stung by an insect such as a bee or wasp, be sure to watch for any signs of a severe allergic reaction (called anaphylaxis) such as swelling of the lips, tongue, or mouth, and/or trouble breathing and/or dizziness. You should seek emergency help immediately if you have any signs of anaphylaxis after a sting or if you have had an anaphylactic reaction to a sting in the past. If you are experiencing a bothersome reaction to an insect bite that is confined to the area around where you were bitten, you should see your Rexall Pharmacist. Your Rexall Pharmacist can assess your condition to ensure you do not have any signs and symptoms that would require treatment by a doctor. In addition to suggesting treatment for your symptoms, your Rexall Pharmacist will review other ways to manage the discomfort associated with your insect bite(s), such as the use of cool compresses.

What can my Rexall Pharmacist prescribe to relieve the discomfort of insect bites?

Your Rexall Pharmacist can assess your situation and discuss the benefits and risks of available treatment options based on your personal circumstances. If deemed appropriate, your Rexall Pharmacist may prescribe an ointment, cream or lotion, antihistamine pill, or pain reliever that will help to relieve the itch and discomfort associated with the reaction to the insect bite(s). If you have any questions about your condition or your treatment, or feel that your medication may be causing side effects, don’t hesitate to ask your Rexall Pharmacist at any time.
