TORONTO, September 8, 2018 – The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer announces $172 million has been raised since the events inception in 2003. Funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer support Personalized Cancer Medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.

This year 3,200 participants raised $4.7 million, walking either the 15 kilometre night walk, which took place on Friday evening, or 15, 25 or 40 kilometres through the streets of Toronto on Saturday.

“Nearly one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime and funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk are vital to support the transformational research, world leading clinical enhancements and supportive care programs for cancer patients,” said Michael Burns, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

“The Night Walk last night was a great success and an exciting new element to the Walk, which is in its 16th year and has raised a total of $172 million. Thank you to our community of walkers, sponsors, donors, crew and volunteers who continue to believe in The Princess Margaret and show your commitment to help conquer cancer in our lifetime,” added Burns.

The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer brings together communities of survivors and their supporters who spend months fundraising and training in order to participate. The OneWalk allows participants to choose their distance and to fundraise to support of the type of cancer that matters most to them.

“I lost my sister and best friend to cancer and when I think about them, I am overcome with emotion and I miss them both every day but I keep walking, so others do not have to lose their loved ones. I starting walking 16 years ago to help make a difference and now, I can’t walk away,” said Nancy Lee, a 16-year participant from Toronto.

“I walked 15 kilometres on Friday and I am back on Saturday to walk an additional 40 kilometres, which is nothing compared to those who face cancer. I have personally raised over $150,000 since 2003, to support the incredible work that takes place at The Princess Margaret. I have witnessed breakthroughs that are attributed to the funds raised through the OneWalk and we must all continue to walk and raise the crucial funds to conquer cancer,” added Lee.

Rexall came on board in 2016 as the event’s title sponsor. Rexall’s support is critical to the success of OneWalk and will enable The Princess Margaret to invest more funds raised into their core cancer research programs.

“Rexall is proud to have a team of dedicated walkers who keep up the momentum to conquering cancer and raise funds to help improve the lives of Canadians,” said Beth Newlands Campbell, President of Rexall Pharmacy Group Ltd.

“We believe in giving back to our communities and are committed to support The Princess Margaret and the tremendous work that takes place every day for our loved ones and patients facing the disease.”

New to 2019, participants can choose to walk 15 kilometres at sunset, through the streets of Toronto in the Cty Nights Walk, or join the 25 kilometre Day Trip, which will take place in a picturesque Ontario nature setting.

“The walk continues to evolve and 2019 brings exciting additions in our 17th year. We hope everyone will join the City Nights Walk and Day Trip, offering two days of walking in and out of the city, while supporting our mission to conquer cancer,” said Burns.

The 2019 event will take place September 6th and 7th. To register or for more information visit www.onewalk.ca or call 416-815-9255.
