PPIs (proton pump inhibitors)

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce production of stomach acid by blocking the acid-producing action of an enzyme called the proton pump.

PPIs available in Canada include:

  • esomeprazole (Nexium®)
  • lansoprazole (Prevacid®)
  • omeprazole (Losec® and others)
  • pantoprazole (Pantoloc® and others)
  • rabeprazole (Pariet®)

PPIs can provide resolution of acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn. Since symptoms commonly return after symptom resolution of heartburn has been achieved, many doctors will leave their patients on a long-term dose of acid-relieving medication. The PPIs have been found to prevent further heartburn symptoms.

PPIs also help heal the esophagus. As well, they can lower the risk of esophageal damage and heartburn complications.

The typical side effects of PPIs may include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and itching.

PPIs have the potential to interact with some other medications. If you are taking medications other than a PPI, be sure that your doctor and pharmacist are aware. To get the most benefit from your treatment, be sure you are taking your medication according to your doctor's and pharmacist's instructions. Ideally, PPIs should be taken about 30 minutes before a meal. If your symptoms persist, see your doctor for an assessment of your condition and to find a way to achieve symptom resolution of your heartburn.
