Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about hair care? We got you covered.

  • Consider your natural hair colour as your starting point when choosing a hair colour shade change.

Each hair dye product has a helpful colouring scale on the packaging to help you determine the approximate final colour each will produce based on your hair colours’ starting point.

If you are looking to go lighter than your current hair colour, choose a permanent hair dye that is for colour lightening and contains bleach. Follow the product guidelines for achieving the shade of your choice. It is important to note that some lighter hair colours may require professional hair services for hair shade shifts.

If you are looking for a darker hair shade, choose a darker colour and follow the guidelines on the product to determine which will give you the shade you are looking for. Your starting hair colour in combination with the chosen hair dye will each give a different final product, so it’s important to choose a brand and shade that works with your starting hair colour.

It is also important to consider your hair type when choosing a hair dye. Choose a product that will work with your hair type for best results (ex. fine, coarse, colour-treated).

  • First, determine how much grey hair you are looking to cover up; a root cover-up, a root touch-up, highlights or a full head of colour.

Choose a product tailored to the area and amount of grey hair you want to cover up. For example, if you are looking to give your roots a colour boost, choose an at-home hair dye treatment for root-cover up in the shade you’re trying to achieve.

For full hair coverage and long lasting results, choose a permanent or demi-permanent hair dye treatment. Not all hair dyes are the same - each brand and shade can give varying final shade.

  • Permanent hair colours are best for long lasting colouring at home. Permanent hair dye does not wash out over time like semi-permanent and temporary hair dyes do, however, the shade of the colour can fade over time, therefore re-application may be needed. Permanent hair colours are the best choice for full colour coverage and grey coverage.

Semi-permanent hair colour is a great choice if you are looking for a colour change that only lasts for 6-8 weeks. Semi-permanant hair colours do not contain bleach, therefore they are best suited for achieving similar hair colours to your existing hair colour or a darker shade. Semi-permanent hair dyes will wash out and fade over time.

Temporary hair colour lasts for about 1-2 days and will rinse out when you wash it. Temporary hair dye typically comes in the form of a spray, a tube, as a hair toner or as a root concealer and is best suited for temporary cover up or colour touch-up.

  • The amount of time you should wait in-between hair colouring sessions depends on the type of hair dye you used (permanent, semi-permanent, temporary or a lightener). Each hair dye type has a different length of time it typically lasts for and when your next application should be.

For example, a temporary hair colour typically lasts for a day or two and then should be re-applied as needed. A permanent hair dye however, typically lasts for 6-12 weeks and then should be re-applied as desired.

Read the suggested application instructions on the product you’ve chosen for best results.

  • Choose a hair dye product that has long lasting results. Follow the instructions on the hair dye packaging on colour maintenance to prevent fading and how to best promote healthy, long-lasting colour. Re-apply the hair dye application as directed for best results.
