First, you will be asked questions about your health, symptoms, allergies, medical history, and medications. There may also be a physical assessment or testing, and based on the results, the pharmacist may prescribe medication, recommend treatments, or refer you to a doctor.
Some services such as vaccines are covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), and the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) covers the cost of approximately 5,000 medications for eligible residents. However, it is best to ask your pharmacist about specific services or medications to see if they are covered.
Most minor ailments and conditions can be treated with the help of a pharmacist, including UTIs, headaches, allergies, cold sores, insect bites, heartburn, pink eye, period cramps, skin infections, shingles, and more. Major conditions require assessment from a doctor.
