What Causes Diarrhea? Types & Causes of Diarrhea

Acute, Persistent & Chronic Diarrhea Causes

Common causes of acute or persistent diarrhea include:

Bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections
Antibiotics or reactions to medications
Food intolerances
Food poisoning

Common causes of chronic diarrhea include:

Celiac disease
Crohn's disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Certain prescription medications
Radiation therapy
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
Ulcerative colitis (causes ulcers and swelling in part of the digestive tract)
Whipple's disease

Other Common Diarrhea Triggers

Outside of the broad types of diarrhea, there are also specific types based on their triggers like:

Antibiotic-associated Diarrhea: Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, affecting approximately 25% of individuals taking them. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea typically begins a week after starting antibiotics and resolves on its own within a few days after you stop taking them. Although symptoms are often mild, if they are severe or diarrhea lasts longer than expected, consult your Rexall Pharmacist.

Stress-induced Diarrhea: Your mental health and gut are closely linked, which is why anxiety and stress can cause diarrhea. Stress and anxiety often triggers your ‘flight or fight’ response, which sends stress signals to the gut. In turn, the gut can release hormones that speed up movements in the large intestine to expel toxins from your body. If stress-induced diarrhea is affecting you, talk to your Rexall Pharmacist for advice on managing anxiety and stress and symptoms like diarrhea.

Traveller's Diarrhea: The most common illness among travelers, caused by various bacteria, parasites, or viruses from contaminated food, water, or person-to-person contact. While over-the-counter medications may offer relief, sometimes prescription drugs or antibiotics are needed. The risk varies by destination and can strike during or after travel, so consider booking a travel health consultation with a Rexall Pharmacist before your next trip.

Supplements & Other Triggers: Starting a new supplement or medication can sometimes cause short-term side effects as your body adjusts. For example, while probiotics can improve digestion and relieve diarrhea, it can cause diarrhea when you first add them to your diet or if you’re taking too much. Similarly, medications or supplements with magnesium can cause diarrhea if taken in excess. Talk to a Rexall Pharmacist if you think a medication or supplement you’re taking may be the cause of your diarrhea.

Tip:

When diarrhea strikes, be sure to drink lots of fluids, such as water with electrolytes, juice, and broth to prevent dehydration and replace the fluids and salt your body lost.

Finding Relief from Diarrhea

Rexall offers a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) diarrhea medications, including loperamide (e.g., Imodium) and bismuth subsalicylate (e.g., Pepto-Bismol), along with prescription medications and antibiotics.

If you're not sure which medication you need, talk to your Rexall Pharmacist. They can suggest the right product based on your symptoms, helping you find relief and avoid other health risks like dehydration.
