Common Vaccinations for Travel

We can provide various vaccinations for travel, including routine immunizations (e.g., flu, COVID-19), booster shots, and vaccines for preventable, travel-related diseases like typhoid, hepatitis A & B, yellow fever, and more.

  • Cholera and traveller’s diarrhea are both diarrheal infections, typically caused by consuming contaminated food or water. These infections can lead to loose, watery stools and severe dehydration. Depending on the cholera vaccine your pharmacist recommends (e.g., Vaxchora, Dukoral), you may require multiple doses and may need to receive it a certain number of days or weeks before your trip.

Already have your cholera vaccine? Talk to your pharmacist about getting a booster before your trip.

  • Hepatitis A and B are types of viral liver infections. Hepatitis A is passed through feces, where the virus can get on one’s hands and eventually to their mouth (e.g., handling food or biting nails). Hepatitis B is spread by blood and bodily fluids (e.g., sharing toothbrushes or razors).

The number of doses you need for hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines can vary depending on age and existing medical conditions. Book a travel health consultation to determine which vaccine you need and how many doses.

  • Yellow fever is caused by a virus spread by a bite from an infected mosquito and is most common in African countries near the equator and tropical areas of South America. While there are several symptoms you may experience, the most notable —where the name comes from—is the yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).

A single-dose yellow fever vaccine is recommended at least 10 days before travel; however, you should book your travel health consultation 4-6 weeks before your trip to ensure you can get a vaccine appointment in time and confirm stock availability.

  • Typhoid, also referred to as typhoid fever or enteric fever, is an infection caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi. It is most commonly found in developing countries, and symptoms can include a high and sustained fever, constipation, cough, headache, sore throat, and loss of appetite, among others.

Typhoid vaccines offer 50% to 70% protection against the infection, and boosters are available for high-risk individuals. Depending on the type of vaccine (oral or injectable), you may need to get this vaccine one to two weeks before travel.

  • Rabies is a viral disease that affects the nervous system including the brain and spinal cord, commonly spread by a bite or scratch from a rabid animal. In fact, dogs are the most common transmitter of rabies. Symptoms can be physical, like fever, headaches, and nausea, or brain-related, like anxiety, confusion, and hallucinations.

If you’re travelling to a country at a high-risk for rabies, a rabies vaccine may be recommended. If you’re not sure, book a travel health consultation with a Rexall Pharmacist to confirm.

  • Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is an infection caused by Flavivirus that spreads through mosquito bites and is found in nearly all Asian countries and parts of the western Pacific. Most people experience mild to no obvious symptoms, but if left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications.

Typically, Japanese encephalitis vaccines (e.g., Ixiaro) involve two doses with the second dose given four weeks later, so be sure to book your travel health consultation early to secure an appointment for this travel vaccine if required.

  • No, travel vaccines are typically not covered by provincial health plans but some vaccines may be covered by private or extended health insurance plans. To learn more, reach out to your health plan provider or employer.

  • How far in advance you need to get vaccinations for travel depends on the vaccines you need, as some require multiple doses spaced out over time. We recommend scheduling a travel health consultation four-six weeks before your trip (a minimum of four weeks prior) to ensure you have enough time to get the vaccines recommended by your pharmacist. Additionally, many travel vaccines may not be readily available at your pharmacy and might need to be ordered in advance, so the earlier you book your consultation, the better!

  • Yes. Yellow fever vaccines are available at select Rexall locations.

After vaccinations, you will receive an International Certificate of Vaccination. Certain countries require proof of vaccination for entry. Requirements may change, so consult with our travel-knowledgeable pharmacists for the latest updates.

For a list of yellow fever vaccination centres in Canada, visit the Public Health Agency of Canada.

  • Travel vaccines require a bit more planning. These vaccines are not always stocked on-site, so we kindly ask that you book a pre-travel consultation with a Rexall Pharmacist. This allows us to order the appropriate vaccines in advance and ensure everything is ready for your appointment.

  • To ensure your safety and that you receive the most appropriate protection for your destination, travel vaccines are provided following a personalized travel health consultation with a Rexall Pharmacist. This allows us to tailor recommendations and ensure all necessary vaccines are available for your trip.
